Chatham, Massachusetts
A PIECE OF CHATHAM HISTORY
In the early 1900s, as Chatham evolved from a fishing-based economy into one of Cape Cod's premier coastal destinations, a collection of summer cottages was constructed overlooking Chatham Light, North Beach Island, Pleasant Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.
One of these historic cottages, originally built in 1904, stands as an important example of Chatham's architectural heritage and the community's long-standing connection to the sea. Mussato Building Group was honored to participate in its restoration and preservation.

LIFTED, RELOCATED & REBUILT
The home was carefully lifted from its original brick piers, relocated on rails, and placed onto a new permanent foundation. The structure was repositioned and aligned to better suit the site while allowing for improved access and functionality.
The new foundation created valuable additional living space below while significantly enhancing the structural stability of the home, ensuring it will stand for generations to come.

PRESERVING CHARACTER, BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
Throughout the project, original architectural features and structural elements were preserved wherever possible. Exposed beams, custom built-ins, and thoughtfully designed storage solutions maintained the cottage's historic character while significantly improving usability.
Interior spaces were reconfigured to create a more open and functional layout, increasing natural flow throughout the residence while honoring the spirit of the original design.

BALCONY, DECK & HELICAL PILINGS
The final phase included the construction of a second-floor balcony, expansion of the primary deck area, and stabilization of the rear cottage through the installation of helical pilings.
Every detail was thoughtfully executed to complement the home's historic character while ensuring long-term durability and modern structural performance.

2022 CHATHAM PRESERVATION AWARD
This restoration was recognized with the 2022 Chatham Preservation Award, honoring the successful preservation of an important historic property while thoughtfully integrating modern structural and functional improvements.
The award reflects the dedication, craftsmanship, and attention to detail required to preserve Chatham's architectural heritage for future generations. Projects like this represent our commitment to honoring the past while building for the future.
